Curriculum

Our priority is for all children to gain the skills of reading, writing and maths. It is important to us that children enjoy their learning and we teach a curriculum with reading and writing at the centre of it, so that children can practice their literacy skills whilst learning about a wide range of knowledge across all subject areas. The knowledge learnt is broad, balanced and meet the requirements of the National Curriculum whilst being tailored to the needs of our children. Children will learn English, maths and science, together with technology, information technology, history, geography, French, art, music and PE. We also offer RE and Personal, Social and Health Education and citizenship.  Subjects are taught discreetly, with a spiral approach which enables the children to encounter the same learning at different levels throughout their time at Primary School. RE is taught using the Locally Agreed Leicestershire Syllabus - a link for this can be found below. Our own scheme of work is also attached below. We follow the Cambridgeshire Scheme of Work for Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) and more information can be found below. This is such a large document that we have given the overview here but please ask for more information on the units if you would like further information.

Early reading, writing and phonics is taught using Read Write Inc, a high quality scheme which is intended to ensure that all children are reading by the end of Year 1.  Older children are taught reading through Booktalk and Novel study.  All children are taught writing using an oral storytelling approach whilst maths is taught using the Maths No Problem scheme. This gives children a practical base for their maths which can then be developed into more abstract thinking as they move up the school. Children learn maths in parallel groups of same age children - these groups are different to the class groups but are not set by ability.

Children also have the chance to take part in a range of sporting opportunities such as netball, cross-country, after school football, gymnastics and rugby.

As part of our policy on enrichment, children have a number of opportunities to take part in special events in school, such as visits by musicians, artists or dance troupes. They will see at least one play a year. All children will take part in a trip outside school. Year 4 children have an opportunity for a one night residential. Year 6 children will be offered the opportunity to take part in a one week residential visit.

Children are taught swimming at Enderby Leisure Centre. Children in Year 3 and 4 are going in termly blocks at present. Children in years 5 and 6 who are unable to swim 25 metres confidently in a variety of strokes also have catch up lessons until they meet the required standards.

Our full curriculum is shown in the document below.

Parents are kept informed about curriculum coverage and topics each term through a termly newsletter. We also run regular open events where you can see aspects of subjects being taught. If you would like further information on any aspect of our curriculum please contact the Headteacher, Donna Cecchini
